Where business matters

Training and skills

Through its business organisations, and local authority and education partners, Woking is committed to increasing participation in education and employment, with a particular focus on raising the level of youth employment in the area.

To achieve this aim, whilst meeting businesses' workforce needs, there are a number of initiatives that can support local businesses:

If you are interested in taking on a young person as an apprentice, then funding may be available from central government. If your apprentice is aged 16-24, your business may be eligible for the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE). For an apprentice aged 16-18, central government will meet 100% of training costs, and 50% for those aged 19-24. Further grants for training can be obtained, depending upon age and sector.

The local Association of Learning Providers Surrey (ALPS) will support you in applying for and managing the funding, as well as the other aspects of setting up your apprenticeship, from sharing best practice to selecting applicants. Please contact the ALPS Network Manager for more information, or to register interest.

ATCM has joined up with the National Skills Academy for Retail to develop a skills programme aimed at all town centre small retailers including cafes, hair salons, bakeries and market traders.  The Digital High Street Skills Programme offers a foundation course made up of three very practical modules, each lasting half a day. Please contact the ATCM for further information

The Jobcentre Plus supports local employers who are able to offer young people the opportunity to gain some experience of the workplace and a chance to develop their skills, in a number of different ways; including Work Experience and Sector-based Work Academies. To host a work experience or work academy student please contact Woking's Jobcentre Plus
