TEDx returns to Woking

Woking Borough Council is proud to announce that the global phenomenon TEDx is returning to Woking under the theme ‘Innovation’ on Wednesday 8 November, and the search for engaging participants has begun.

TED talks give charismatic speakers the opportunity to expose new ideas in the fields of Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) - to a broad, international audience. These ideas must be supported by concrete evidence and ideally address a subject that has not been explored before.

TEDx Woking will feature a combination of 12 speakers and acts – including theatre, dance, comedy or poetry – ideally from Woking or the local area. The Council’s Business Liaison Team is looking for speakers with ‘ideas worth spreading’, where an innovative solution, invention, company or production has contributed to changing the world. Speakers must be able to talk or perform ‘notes-free’ for up to 18 minutes maximum.

From an annual conference which began in 1990, TED talks have spread across the globe, with the TEDx Program designed to help communities, organisations and individuals spark conversations and make connections on a local level.

TEDx Woking will have a dedicated website to host all information on the event, including speaker topics and bios, and the talks will be recorded and may be uploaded to the TED Youtube Channel. Since June 2015, over 2000 TED talks had been posted online.

Speaker David Birch from Consult Hyperion based at the University of Surrey took part in TEDx Woking in January 2015. Since then, his talk on the future of money has been watched nearly 20,000 times.

If you would like to be part of TEDxWoking or would like to nominate a speaker from your organisation, please contact Glenn Thorogood at Woking Borough Council on 01483 743016 or email [email protected]
