Commercial Way works to start on Monday

Works to renovate and revive Commercial Way will commence on Monday 8 April.

This exciting multi-million pound scheme will extend the public realm enhancements already completed in Jubilee Square, Gloucester Walk and Mercia Walk, creating an attractive, tree-lined and clutter-free pedestrian boulevard for all to enjoy.

The area between Alexander House and Provincial House will be the first to be enhanced, with:

  • new high quality granite paving, street furniture, lighting, cycle hoops and wayfinders

  • new species of Sweetgum and Elm trees

  • façade and canopy enhancements to Wolsey Place Shopping Centre

  • upgrades to the CCTV system

  • the creation of a new square at the eastern end of Commercial Way adjacent to Mercia Walk and Church Path

  • space for occasional specialist markets and events.

A consultation was undertaken in March 2012, and the views of people who live, shop and work in Woking helped to shape the proposals for Commercial Way.

David Johnson, Woking Borough Council's Corporate Strategy Manager, said: "This is the primary stage of the Commercial Way public realm enhancements, which will revitalise this important retail, commercial and residential space, attracting new businesses and visitors to the town. We have listened to the views of those living and working in the Borough and works are about to begin. It will provide a visually attractive space in which businesses can operate, and residents and visitors can enjoy."

Works will be carried out by specialist contractor, Mclaughlin & Harvey Ltd, on behalf of Woking Borough Council, and disruption to retail premises and residential properties will be kept to a minimum.

This is the first phase of enhancements to Commercial Way, and the Chapel Street to Cawsey Way section will be completed at a later date.
