Works commence on new town centre market

Woking Borough Council announced yesterday (1 July 2013) that works would immediately commence to transform Peacock Walk into the new permanent home for Woking Market, and to construct new public toilets.

The exciting project will provide up to 16 purpose-built permanent kiosks featuring quality stalls with scope for an additional seven seasonal stalls, together with new granite paving and lighting to create a light, bright, welcoming atmosphere and a clutter-free refurbished pedestrian route.

The scheme also includes the construction of new, fully-accessible, public toilets and baby changing facilities, located on the ground floor of Wolsey Place Shopping Centre. New anti-slip flooring will also be installed in the mall link from Wolsey Walk to Peacock Walk.

Cllr Gary Elson, Portfolio Holder for Public Markets, said: "We are delighted that works to relocate Woking Market to the heart of the town are about to begin. Creating a high quality, diverse and vibrant market catering for food, fashion and household goods, as well as seasonal speciality stalls, will enhance the shopping experience for residents and visitors, while complementing the redevelopment works in and around Jubilee Square."

During the construction works, there will be no access between the Bandstand end of Peacock Walk and the entrance to the Yellow Car Park along Peacock Walk. Diversion routes will be signed.

The current market site, located at the end of Commercial Way and High Street, is set for demolition as part of the proposed Bandstand Square Development. It will make way for a new road junction, connecting High Street and Victoria Way, together with new bus stops and a public plaza fronting the anticipated new Marks & Spencer store and proposed hotel and residential accommodation.

The works will be carried out by specialist contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey, on behalf of Bandstand Square Developments Limited (BSDL), a joint venture between Moyallen, Head Lessee of the Peacocks Shopping Centre, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council.

It is anticipated that the public toilets will be fully operational by late 2013, while the new covered market will be completed by mid 2014.
