Success for Woking at prestigious building awards

A local building project, nominated by Woking Borough Council's Building Control Team, beat off competition from 40 local authorities across the region to win a prestigious award at the LABC South East Building Excellence Awards, held last month.

The awards give recognition to companies and individuals within the construction industry who are committed to delivering high quality buildings. They also highlight the importance of Building Control in achieving these high standards and the role of building regulations.

The extension to Wolsey Place Shopping Centre, designed by Woking Town Centre Management Limited, a joint venture partnership between Woking Borough Council and Moyallen, was awarded Best Large Commercial Development Project for its quality construction.

Cllr Ashley Bowes, Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: "We are delighted to have picked up an award for this development, which is in the heart of Woking. It illustrates how councils can work with developers and designers to create high quality developments that enhance an area. The expansion has certainly developed the retail offer in Woking Town Centre as a result, putting it firmly on the map as a visitor destination."

The Wolsey Place expansion connected the centre to the adjoining Peacocks Centre and formed part of the revitalisation of Woking Town Centre. The next phase of works improved Mercia Walk, with a refurbished canopy, new paving, furniture and lighting. The former entrance to Woking Library was also transformed into a new café, enabling refurbishment works to take place to Woking Library. The redevelopment of Commercial Way is currently underway to improve the public realm, building facades and green spaces and completion is anticipated in autumn 2013.
