Major highways works to commence in Woking Town Centre

24 January 2017

To support the continued economic growth of Woking and create jobs, whilst improving public transport and safety for cyclists and pedestrians, a series of highway enhancement works will commence from Monday 30 January 2017 across Woking Town Centre.

Woking Integrated Transport Project

Working in partnership, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council have commenced work on a multi-million pound highway improvements project that will significantly enhance traffic flow in the town.

The project, which is funded by developer contributions and a grant of £11 million from the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership, offers a once in a generation opportunity to improve Woking Town Centre for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors.

As part of the project, from Monday 30 January 2017, important changes to the highways network will be introduced which will impact on everyday movements. The key changes will see:

  • High Street and The Broadway (from Duke Street) become one-way to west-bound traffic only.
  • No left turn from Victoria Way to Cawsey Way/High Street via Church Street West.
  • The creation of a link road connecting High Street with Victoria Way.
  • The closure of Church Street West and Cawsey Way to all traffic (from May 2017*).
  • The relocation of the taxi rank from High Street to The Broadway.
  • Improved bus facilities along High Street and The Broadway.
  • The realignment of Chertsey Road to improve pedestrian and cycle connectivity.

Beginning at the junction between Locke Way and The Broadway on Monday 30 January 2017, the works will be phased to help minimise disruption to road users as outlined below.

The Broadway Monday 30 January – August 2017*
Church Street West Monday 30 January – March 2017*
Chertsey Road March – April 2017*
High Street and Chapel Street March – December 2017*
High Street link road complete May 2017*

* Please note all dates are subject to change.

Once works to the High Street link road are complete, an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) will be introduced. The Order will restrict access, parking, loading and unloading of vehicles along High Street. Details of the access arrangements will be announced shortly.

Essential utilities works

In addition to the works to High Street and The Broadway, and to continue to support the economic growth of Woking Town Centre, it is necessary to carry out essential utilities works to Victoria Way. By carrying out these works now, it is anticipated that future disruption to the highways network will be minimised.

Monday 30 January to Sunday 5 February 2017

  • Victoria Way will be closed south-bound between Lockfield Drive and Goldsworth Road.
  • Victoria Way north0bound will remain open.
  • Church Street West will be closed between the junctions with Forge End and Victoria Way.
  • Due to the closure of Victoria Way, the spiral exit from the Shoppers Red Car Park will be suspended. Drivers are asked to use the main car park exit.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Monday 6 February to Sunday 19 March 2017

  • Victoria Way south-bound will be reduced to one lane contra-flow only from the junction of Lockfield Drive to Victoria Arch.
  • Traffic travelling north-bound will be diverted along Goldsworth Road, Church Street West and Forge End onto Victoria Way.
  • Church Street West between the junctions of Forge End and Victoria Way will remain closed to through traffic.
  • To support the movement of traffic through the diversion, there will be no access to Goldsworth Road from the Morrison’s roundabout.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Saturday 11 February to Sunday 19 February 2017

  • Victoria Way west-bound will close between Brook House Roundabout and the junction with Chobham Road.
  • Traffic travelling south-bound along the A320 will be diverted along the A245 at Six Crossroads Roundabout before turning left along the A3046 Chobham Road to rejoin Victoria Way.
  • Access to Double Tree Hilton Hotel and Victoria Way Car Park will be maintained at all times.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Bus diversions

Whilst we carry out these important works, it is necessary to make changes to existing bus routes and, where required, provide temporary bus stops. This will include the closure of the bus stops located along Cawsey Way.

Whilst these works will bring many long-term benefits to the continued economic vitality of Woking Town Centre, the Council recognises that these works are likely to cause disruption to local residents and businesses.

Woking Borough Council would like to ask for your patience during this time. We are fully committed to keeping Woking Town Centre open for business and disruption to a minimum in order to deliver these significant highways enhancements that will benefit everyone in Woking Borough.
